Today, I want to share with you a fun and traditional game that is often played during Hanukkah - dreidel! Dreidel is a spinning top game that has been enjoyed by children and adults for generations. It’s a great way to celebrate the holiday and spend time with loved ones.
How to Play Dreidel
Playing dreidel is quite simple. All you need is a dreidel, which is a four-sided spinning top, and a pot of coins or chocolate gelt. The dreidel has a Hebrew letter on each side: נ (Nun), ג (Gimel), ה (Hay), and ש (Shin). Each letter represents a different action in the game.
- נ (Nun) - Do nothing; neither win nor lose
- ג (Gimel) - Take everything in the pot
- ה (Hay) - Take half of the pot
- ש (Shin) - Put one coin or piece of chocolate into the pot
To start the game, each player begins with an equal number of coins or gelt. The first player spins the dreidel and performs the action indicated by the letter that lands face up. The next player then takes a turn, and so on, until all the coins or gelt have been collected by a single player.
